Criminal Defense

Bill Smock has been practicing Criminal Law in and around Terre Haute, Indiana for over 35 years. He has defended individuals accused of crimes in both State and Federal Court. Joe Etling has practiced Criminal Law for the past 22 years, and also has defended the accused in both State and Federal Court. Mike Slagle has been practicing Criminal Law since graduating from law school in 1998, and, primarily is responsible for the research associated with the firm’s criminal law practice.

No case is too big or too small for Smock & Etling. The firm has handled thousands of criminal cases. The firm handles the most serious cases, including murder, and all A, B, C and D Felony cases.  The firm also handles all A, B, and C misdemeanor cases. The firm has handled numerous murder cases throughout Indiana in both State and Federal Court. Additionally, the firm has handled a number of death penalty cases.

The firm has handled thousands of cases involving operating a vehicle while intoxicated. The firm also regularly represents college students on criminal violations, or offering advice on violations of the student code of conduct at their respective institution. 

In addition to his experience, Mr. Smock is a member of the Terre Haute Bar Association (Past President), Indiana State Bar Association and the U.S. Seventh Circuit Bar Association. He has served as the Chairman of the Indiana Section of the committee on Criminal Law and Procedure for the Seventh Circuit Bar Association. He is also a member of the Indiana Trial Lawyers Association; the Indiana Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers; the Association of Trial Lawyers of America; the American Board of Trial Advocates; and the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers.

In addition to his experience, Mr. Etling is a member of the Terre Haute Bar Association, the Indiana State and American Bar Associations; the Indiana Trial Lawyers Association; the Indiana Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers; the United States Court of Appeals Seventh Circuit Bar Association; the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers; and the Terre Haute Bar Association.

The firm has experience in handling matters involving complex State and Constitutional Law issues, including search and seizure issues, Miranda issues, and violation of individual constitutional rights.
